![]() ![]() This is pure fun that exists without exploring thinly veiled sexual fantasies of the author (there is little romance), and does not become cumbersome with stacks of the enumerated "system messages" that make LitRPGs such a slog. That said, this is not deeply philosophical fare, nor is it meant to be. The bad guys are bad because they're just jerks, and they're usually jerks because (history occurs and now they twirl their moustaches while having no empathy). ![]() If I had to complain about this series, it would be that there aren't really any gray-area antagonists. If you haven't read them, you're missing out on smart, wry, irreverent humor mixed with high adventure and action, periodically spiked with moments of intense gravity. This latest installment takes a logical step into a new arc that delves into a lot of history referred to in previous novels, but you won't be lost if you haven't read them. ![]() These novels are entertaining, engrossing and hilarious by any metric, if you like fantasy. ![]()
